Education Cuts to Local Schools

STATE GOVERNMENT’S NEW STUDENT CENTRED FUNDING MODEL IS NOT
CENTRED ON THE BEST INTERESTS OF LOCAL SECONDARY STUDENTS.

Local Schools will suffer further massive, long-term cuts under the new
funding model to commence in 2015.

Local MLA, Dr Tony Buti said, “These latest cuts are a bitter blow to education in this
area.”

“This new funding model comes on top of the $2.5m of cuts to local schools and
$185m worth of cuts across WA public schools this year.”

“These cuts are an attack on some of the State’s most disadvantaged students and
are not about balancing the budget,” he said.

“These cuts are part of this conservative government’s ideological agenda to down
scale all public services.”

“The State Government is taking $45m out of the WA secondary system over the
next 5 years and re-allocating it to early education in primary schools.” He said.
“It is great to see early years education finally get the focus and funding it deserves,
but it should not be to the detriment of students who missed out in primary school
and have now moved on to high school.”

Dr Buti said, “A perfect example of this State Government’s twisted logic, is the
decision to cut funding to a local school which has won awards for its successful,
specialised early education programs.”

“How can our local high schools help disadvantaged students and provide high
quality education while suffering funding cuts year after year” he said.
“With the best will in the world this is an impossible task.”
