Water Catchment – Asbestos Dump

LOCAL MLA, DR TONY BUTI, HAS RAISED SERIOUS CONCERNS
ABOUT THE DUMPING OF ASBESTOS AND OTHER WASTE IN HILLS
WATER CATCHMENT AREAS.

“A number of illegal dumping sites near local dams have been identified but
authorities have failed to act for over 12 months.”

“Industrial waste and household rubbish is being dumped in large quantities in
water catchment areas at Churchman’s Brook, Wungong and Canning Dams,”
Dr Buti said.

“Garbage bags and asbestos have been dumped in a waterhole which feeds
into the Churchman’s Brook Dam.”

Dr Buti said, “Household rubbish, paint and tyres are dumped in
environmentally sensitive areas and nothing is being done to clean it up or
prosecute the offenders.”

“Toxins from these dumped materials could end up in our drinking water.”
“This illegal dumping was reported to the Water Corporation over 12 months
ago but no action has been taken to remove the rubbish.” Dr Buti said.

“This lack of action sends polluters a message that they are able to continue
to dump with impunity and the piles of rubbish continue to grow at an alarming
rate.”

“A car which was dumped 7 weeks ago has now been covered by a truck load
of asbestos.”

Dr Buti said, “I have written to the Minister for Water with an urgent request
that she address this matter as a priority.”
